Structural revision

Revision focused on a text's organization, progression and balance rather than individual sentences.

Structural revision examines a manuscript at the level of scenes, sections and overall progression. It may reorder chapters, remove a subplot or develop a missing argument.

It often precedes detailed sentence work because a polished passage may still need to be cut. A reverse outline and reader feedback can help locate the problem before the writer chooses a remedy.

Example

A revelation moves from chapter 18 to chapter 6 to give the investigation a clear direction.

In the workshop

Resolve large-scale problems before polishing the affected passages.
