Outline
A structured plan of a text's sections, their contents and their purpose.
An outline maps the intended sequence of sections, chapters or scenes. It may record events, arguments and transitions. The amount of detail depends on the project and the writer's process.
It helps expose gaps and test a structure before drafting every page. It remains provisional: discoveries during writing can justify moving, combining or removing sections.
Example
Chapter 1: arrival in the village. Chapter 2: the missing register. Chapter 3: the first accusation.
