Synesthesia
Figurative language that describes one sense through the qualities of another.
Literary synesthesia describes one sensory experience through another. A voice might feel velvety or a color seem loud, inviting readers to transfer qualities between senses.
The literary device is distinct from synesthesia as a perceptual experience. It can give shape to a hard-to-name sensation when the association remains meaningful in context.
