60,000? 80,000? 120,000? When you're writing a novel, the word count question always comes up eventually. Too short, and an agent will find the story underdeveloped. Too long, and a debut manuscript will scare off acquisitions editors.

The answer depends on your genre, your audience, and your goals (traditional publishing, self-publishing, or contests). This guide gives you exact benchmarks, genre by genre, based on current industry standards.

The general rule

A standard adult novel runs between 70,000 and 100,000 words. That's where the vast majority of published novels fall.

For a debut novel, agents and editors are even more specific: 80,000 to 95,000 words. Beyond 100,000, a first-time novelist faces significant market resistance — printing costs are higher, commercial risk is greater, and agents' interest tends to wane.

Below 50,000 words, you're generally in novella territory rather than novel territory.

Word count by genre

Genre Range (words) Estimated pages*
Short story 1,000 – 10,000 4 – 40
Novella 20,000 – 50,000 80 – 200
Contemporary romance 60,000 – 80,000 240 – 320
Historical romance 80,000 – 100,000 320 – 400
Thriller / Mystery 70,000 – 90,000 280 – 360
Literary fiction 80,000 – 100,000 320 – 400
Science fiction 90,000 – 120,000 360 – 480
Fantasy 90,000 – 120,000 360 – 480
Epic fantasy 100,000 – 150,000+ 400 – 600+
Historical fiction 90,000 – 120,000 360 – 480
Young adult (12-16) 40,000 – 70,000 160 – 280
Middle grade (8-12) 25,000 – 50,000 100 – 200

*Based on approximately 250 words per page in standard manuscript format.

Why the differences?

Fantasy and science fiction run longer because they require worldbuilding: the reader doesn't know this universe, so you need to construct it. A thriller, by contrast, unfolds in a familiar setting — no need to explain how the FBI works.

Romance tends to be shorter because the genre relies on a tight structure (meet, obstacles, resolution) and a limited cast. Romance readers consume books quickly and in volume — a shorter format is an advantage, not a limitation.

Literary fiction has the widest range because the constraints are artistic, not commercial.

How long are famous novels?

Novel Author Words Pages*
The Great Gatsby Fitzgerald ~47,000 ~188
The Catcher in the Rye Salinger ~73,000 ~292
1984 Orwell ~88,000 ~352
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Rowling ~77,000 ~308
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Rowling ~257,000 ~1,028
Gone Girl Flynn ~145,000 ~580
War and Peace Tolstoy ~587,000 ~2,348
Les Misérables Hugo ~655,000 ~2,620

*Based on approximately 250 words per page.

Notice the gap between the first Harry Potter (77,000 words) and the fifth (257,000). Rowling could afford to write longer books because she already had a captive audience. A debut novelist doesn't have that luxury.

Hugo and Tolstoy wrote in an era of serial publication — they were paid by the word. Standards have changed.

Converting words to pages

The conversion depends on format, font, and spacing:

Format Words per page
Standard manuscript (Times 12, double-spaced) ~250
Mass market paperback ~300
Trade paperback (literary) ~250-280
E-book Variable (depends on device)

Quick formula: divide your word count by 250 to get the page count in standard manuscript format.

What if your novel is "too long" or "too short"?

Too short (under 60,000 words)

Your story might need more development. Check:

  • Do your secondary characters have narrative arcs?
  • Are your key scenes fully developed?
  • Do you have subplots that enrich the main story?
  • Is your world sufficiently fleshed out?

A short novel isn't necessarily a problem — Camus' The Stranger is 36,000 words and it's a masterpiece. But if you're targeting traditional publishing, a novel under 60,000 words will be hard to place unless you're writing in a genre that allows it (category romance, intentional novella).

Too long (over 120,000 words)

Your story might need tightening. Check:

  • Are there scenes that don't advance the plot?
  • Are all your descriptions necessary?
  • Could any subplots be cut without hurting the story?
  • Could any characters be merged?

For a debut novel, exceeding 120,000 words is a red flag for agents. If your story truly demands it (epic fantasy, sweeping historical saga), consider splitting it into two volumes.

Word count is not a goal

The trap would be treating word count as an end in itself. "I'm going to write an 80,000-word novel" is a poor starting point. The story should dictate the length, not the other way around.

What matters is that every scene serves the plot, every character has a reason to exist, and the pacing stays consistent from beginning to end.

The benchmarks in this article are compasses, not absolute rules. They help you gauge where you stand relative to market expectations, but the quality of your writing will always matter more than your word count.

Tracking your progress

If you want to keep an eye on your word count while writing, Extypis displays real-time statistics per scene, per chapter, and across your entire project — words, characters, paragraphs, sentences, with reading time estimates. You can also set a writing goal (word count target with a deadline) and track your progress with a visual indicator.

In summary

A standard novel runs between 70,000 and 100,000 words. For a debut, aim for 80,000-95,000. Adjust based on your genre: shorter for romance, longer for fantasy. And above all, never sacrifice the quality of your story to hit a quota.
