Back-of-book index
A list of topics, names or concepts directing readers to relevant passages in a book.
A back-of-book index provides access by subject rather than reading order. Usually alphabetized, its entries point to relevant pages. Subentries and cross-references can distinguish uses and connect related terminology.
Useful indexing involves judgment: not every occurrence of a word deserves a reference. Page locators must match the final edition, and digital formats may use other navigation methods.
