Pagination
The numbering of a document's pages within a particular layout and section structure.
Pagination assigns numbers to pages. A book may use different conventions for front matter and the main text, and a page can be counted without displaying a number.
Layout changes can invalidate references in contents and indexes. Reflowable ebooks do not have the same fixed page boundaries as a print edition, since device and reading settings affect the display.
Example
Front matter uses i, ii, iii; the first chapter starts at 1.
In the workshop
