WriteControl or Extypis: which one to write your book?
Two online writing apps, free to start and on subscription to go further. Here is how each one answers the questions people ask before choosing, on the free version and then on the paid one, and the rounds WriteControl wins are on the board.

How this page was made
Every line about WriteControl was read on its own site on 5 October 2026: the pricing grid, the AI page, the FAQ, the terms, its documentation (export, offline mode, front matter, import, story structure) and its App Store listing. Extypis prices and limits are read live from our pricing page. On the free side, each app is compared on what it gives for nothing; on the paid side, on its cheapest plan.

What WriteControl does better
- Its free version goes further in volume: five books, with at most 10,000 words per chapter, where our free account stops at 1 project and 15,000 words.
- It opens and works offline, as long as the book has already been opened on that computer. Extypis keeps the text of a tab that is already open, but does not open offline.
- Its Premium has a spell checker, which works one chapter at a time. Extypis corrects a chosen passage with AI, on your AI credits.
- It offers eleven book sizes for the PDF, with mirrored pages, where Extypis offers three: A4, A5 and Letter.
- It has the book printed from the app, by BoD, from a single copy, without an ISBN and for private use.
- It has Android, iPhone and iPad apps, free and synced with the site.
What Extypis does that WriteControl does not
- You write in the pages of the book, at the size and margins of your PDF, and you type the dedication, the preface and the copyright page in their place.
- It finds your characters, places and objects everywhere in the text, nicknames included once they are on the sheet, without spending AI credits.
- It links sheets with the relationship you write, and draws the network on a map, from the free account.
- It publishes your book on a reading page, open to everyone, where readers with an account comment paragraph by paragraph.
- It issues a “human origin” certificate, which says what was typed, pasted or moved, without saying where the ideas come from, and is shared by a link or as a PDF.
- It removes every AI tool from the screen with one setting, and its 9 € per month plan gives no monthly AI credits.
And AI credits, how many and how?
The two apps' credits do not convert into each other, so this page does not put them in a round and gives each one's figures.
- WriteControl: AI requires Premium at €12.90 per month, with 200,000 credits a month and 100 image generations, and the month's credits do not carry over. 300,000 more credits and 600 images cost €30, with no expiry.
- Extypis: 300 credits given once with the free account, then, on a paid plan, top-ups from €6 for 4,000 credits, with no expiry. No plan gives monthly credits.
Moving from one to the other
From WriteControl, export the book to Word, which is free, then import the file into Extypis: it is split into parts, chapters and scenes, and the characters who come back often already have their sheet, filled with what the text says about them. The free account imports a manuscript as long as it fits in 15,000 words; beyond that, importing requires a subscription. Sheets filled in WriteControl do not carry over. The other way round, Extypis exports DOCX, and WriteControl imports Word from its free version.
The questions people ask us
- Is WriteControl free?
- Yes, with no time limit. Its free version allows five books, with at most 10,000 words per chapter, character sheets, Word, LibreOffice and HTML export, and offline writing. The printer PDF, ePub, front matter, footnotes, the mind map, the spell checker and AI require Premium at €12.90 per month (surveyed on 5 October 2026).
- How much is WriteControl Premium?
- €12.90 per month with no commitment, or €119 per year. Premium raises the number of books to a hundred and includes 200,000 AI credits a month.
- How does the price compare with Extypis?
- Extypis is free with no card, with 1 project and at most 15,000 words per project. After that, Extypis costs 9 € per month, or 120 € once for Extypis Lifetime, and AI is paid as you go.
- Can WriteControl be used offline?
- Yes. According to its FAQ and documentation, the site opens offline if the book has already been opened on that computer; the spell checker, the dictionary and AI wait for the network. Extypis keeps the text of a tab that is already open until the network comes back, but does not open offline.
- How do I move from WriteControl to Extypis?
- Export your book to Word from WriteControl, which is free, then import the file into Extypis: it is split into chapters, and the characters who come back often already have their sheet. The free account imports a manuscript of at most 15,000 words; beyond that, importing requires a subscription.
- Does Extypis work without AI?
- Yes. One setting removes every AI tool from the screen; only importing a manuscript still goes through an AI. The 9 € per month plan gives no monthly AI credits.

Everything our writing app puts in your hands
Five areas, from the first outline to the file ready to send: everything you ask of a writing app. Here is what each one covers.
Hold your story, from outline to final page.
Narrative tools you won't find elsewhere — turn a tangle of ideas into a structure that holds.
The AI reads your project before it suggests anything
Outline, profiles and the scenes you have written: the AI uses them to stay true to your book when it rewrites, continues, summarises or draws a cover. Every suggestion waits for your approval.
Daily writing comfort
Everything that makes long-form writing sustainable: shortcuts, templates, anchored notes, versions, goals.
Analyse and refine your prose
Proofreading, readability, repetitions, connectives, passive voice, emotions and versification: each flagged passage comes with its reason and is one click away in the text.
What you write is what you export.
Your text is laid out as you type, in the format of your PDF. All that is left is to pick the file format, or to publish on Extypis.
