Reedsy Studio or Extypis: which is better for writing your book?
Reedsy Studio and Extypis both open in the browser, with a free account. Reedsy puts writing, co-writing and PDF and EPUB layout in it with no limit, and sells story planning as an option; Extypis gives the whole workshop for free on a single book, then is paid monthly. Here is how each one answers the questions people ask before choosing, what its users say about it, and the rounds Reedsy wins are on the board.

How this page was made
Every line about Reedsy Studio was read on 17 October 2026 on reedsy.com: the overview, the pricing, the FAQ, the pages on writing, planning and formatting, the formatting guide and the help. Its prices are shown there in US dollars, and its own pages do not always give the same name to its options. User reviews come from Trustpilot, Product Hunt and two published reviews, each with its link; the Trustpilot and Product Hunt ratings are for the whole Reedsy company, including its marketplace of editors. Extypis prices and limits are read live from our pricing page.

What bothers its users, and how Extypis answers
The complaints that come back, from the most frequent to the rarest. Opposite each one, what Extypis does, including when it does no better.
The complaint
No offline mode and no app: with no connection, the editor shows an error and keeps nothing locally; testers see it as its biggest flaw.
Reedsy Studio, FAQ · Writer Sanctuary, April 2026 · Reedsy: Scrivener alternatives
Extypis's answer
A tab that is already open keeps your text with no network and sends it when the connection returns. Extypis does not open offline for all that, and can be installed as an app from the browser.
The complaint
The layout is fixed: three templates, four sizes, nothing to adjust; some testers quickly recommend a dedicated tool such as Atticus.
The Write Practice review, 2026 · Writer Sanctuary review, July 2025 · Reedsy: Studio, Atticus and Scrivener compared
Extypis's answer
You set the font, its size, the line spacing and the margins, and you write in the pages at that setting. The size itself is limited to A4, A5 and Letter.
The complaint
Story planning is paid: sheets with attributes, relationships and templates require the Outline option, $7.99 per month, which comes as a surprise; and nothing can be bought once.
The Write Practice review, 2026 · Writer Sanctuary review, July 2025 · Reedsy: Scrivener alternatives
Extypis's answer
Sheets, relationships, map, timeline and scene board are in the free account. Extypis cannot be bought once either: the subscription costs 9 € per month.
The complaint
You do not see the printed page while writing: one tester had to export and then open the file to check their layout.
Writer Sanctuary review, July 2025 · Formatting guide (February 2025)
Extypis's answer
You write in the pages of the book, and the preview of the whole book, cover and table of contents included, opens in one click.
The complaint
Slow saves and lost work: one user saw all her projects disappear, and Reedsy states that a deleted book cannot be recovered.
1 to 3 star reviews on Trustpilot · Reviews on Product Hunt · Reedsy Studio, common questions
Extypis's answer
A deletion goes to the trash, where it stays 30 days, and an entire project can be restored. Each sheet also keeps the versions you freeze.
The complaint
Reading links take no comments, and a guest receives full editing rights: the proofreader has to remember to track their own changes.
Extypis's answer
The reading page of a published book receives comments from your registered readers, paragraph by paragraph, and nobody but you edits the text.
The complaint
Import sometimes fails without explanation: a 7 MB Word file was refused several times, with no message, and only Word and OpenDocument are accepted.

Extypis's answer
Extypis imports Word, PDF, EPUB, Markdown and HTML, and splits the book into parts, chapters and scenes. The split should be checked: it can get a heading wrong.
What Reedsy Studio does better
- Its free account has no limit on books or length, and exports with no limit. The free Extypis account stops at 1 project, 15,000 words per project and 2 exports per month.
- It lets several people write live, with comments and track changes, from the free account. Extypis has one author per project.
- Its print PDF comes out in PDF/X-1a format, in four common book sizes. Extypis offers A4, A5 and Letter.
- Its paid options, taken alone, cost less than Extypis: $4.99 per month for Craft.
- It puts you in touch with editors, designers and agents from its marketplace, from within the editor.
What Extypis does that Reedsy Studio does not
- You write in the pages of the book, at the size, margins and font of your PDF, while Reedsy lays out at export.
- It finds your characters, places and objects everywhere in the text, nicknames included once they are on the sheet.
- It draws the map of the relationships between your sheets and places events on a timeline of the story, from the free account.
- Each scene is a card, and moving it moves the text.
- A tab that is open keeps your text when the network drops, where Reedsy shows an error.
- It publishes your book on a reading page where your readers comment, and issues a “human origin” certificate that says what was typed, pasted or moved.
Moving from Reedsy Studio to Extypis
Extypis does not open a Reedsy book as it is. Reedsy exports to PDF and EPUB: import the EPUB into Extypis, and it is split into chapters and scenes, and the characters who come back often already have their sheet, filled with what the text says about them. Your boards and notes from Reedsy do not carry over. The free account imports a manuscript as long as it fits in 15,000 words; beyond that, importing requires a subscription.
The questions people ask us
- Is Reedsy Studio free?
- Yes: writing, co-writing, importing, formatting and exporting to PDF and EPUB are free, with no limit on books. Two paid options are added: Craft, $4.99 per month, and Outline, $7.99 per month, or $10.99 for both, with a 30-day trial without a card (surveyed on 17 October 2026).
- What do the Craft and Outline options include?
- According to Reedsy, Outline adds unlimited boards, notes with attributes and relationships, templates and list view; Craft adds history with no time limit, daily, weekly and monthly goals, detailed statistics and dark mode.
- Does Reedsy Studio work offline?
- No: its FAQ answers “not at the moment” and places it on its roadmap. There is no app to install; the site opens in the browser. Extypis does not open offline either, but a tab that is already open keeps your text until the network comes back.
- What is the difference with Extypis?
- Both open in the browser. Reedsy Studio is free with no limit for writing, co-writing and exporting, and sells story planning as an option. Extypis gives sheets, the relationship map, the timeline and writing in the pages of the book for free on 1 project, then costs 9 € per month to write more.
- Does Reedsy Studio have AI?
- No, its editor contains none, and Reedsy states that it will never train AI on its authors' texts. Extypis offers AI on request, and one setting removes it from the screen.
- How do I move from Reedsy Studio to Extypis?
- Export your book to EPUB from Reedsy, then import the file into Extypis: it is split into chapters, and the characters who come back often already have their sheet. Boards and notes do not carry over. The free account imports a manuscript of at most 15,000 words.
