WriteControl or Extypis: which one to write your book?

Two online writing apps, both free to start, both on a subscription to go further. Here is how each one answers the questions you ask before choosing, prices and limits included. WriteControl wins six rounds, and they are on the board.

How this page is made

Every line about WriteControl was read on its own site on 17 September 2026: the home page, the pricing grid, the AI page, the FAQ, the community, printing and about pages, and its App Store listing. Extypis prices, credits and limits are read live from the pricing page. Judgments on interface and feel are ours, and the page says so each time.

    Extypis

Yes: Word, PDF, web page or plain text, split into chapters; importing needs a subscription at 9 € per month

    WriteControl

Yes: Word and LibreOffice, on the free plan

What WriteControl does better

  • It opens and writes with no connection at all, and catches up on saving when the network returns. Extypis keeps the text of an open tab, but does not open offline.
  • It gets the book printed from inside the app, through BoD, from a single copy. Extypis stops at the file ready for the printer.
  • It checks spelling, grammar and typography, with Premium. Extypis flags repetitions, passive voice and readability, but does not check spelling.
  • It imports a Word manuscript on the free plan. In Extypis, importing needs a subscription.
  • It speaks five languages and has existed since 2016, with 17,000 registered users by 2018 according to its about page.

What Extypis does that WriteControl does not

  • It recognizes your characters, places and objects in the text, nicknames included, with no tagging, and each name opens its profile.
  • It links the books of a series: a profile created in book 1 serves book 4, and can be edited from any book.
  • It links profiles to each other, with the relationship you write, and draws the project's network on a map.
  • It publishes your book on a reading page where readers comment down to the paragraph.
  • It switches every AI feature off with one setting, and its AI-free plan contains none.
  • It produces a typeset PDF, with footnotes and bibliography paginated, on the free plan.

And AI credits, how many and how?

The two credits do not measure the same thing: at WriteControl a credit is a piece of a word, at Extypis it follows the real cost of the model called. So this page does not score them; it gives each side's figures.

  • WriteControl: AI needs Premium at €12.90 per month including tax, which includes 200,000 credits per month and 100 image generations. The month's credits expire. 300,000 more credits and 600 more images cost €30 and do not expire.
  • Extypis: 50 credits offered once with the free account; 2,000 credits per month with the plan at 13 € per month, and top-ups that never expire. The plan at 9 € per month contains no AI at all.
  • Extypis: finishing a sentence with the Tab key costs no credit, and one setting switches every AI tool off, sending nothing to any model.

Moving from one to the other

From WriteControl, export the book to Word, which is free, then import the file into Extypis: it is split into chapters automatically, and importing needs a subscription at 9 € per month. Character profiles do not travel between the two apps; you re-enter them. The other way round, Extypis exports DOCX and WriteControl imports Word on the free plan.
